Food as Glue

UK Dissemination Workshop, 26 October 2005, London, UK

The UK Food in Later Life project team held their Dissemination Workshop at the National Heart and Lung Institute, London. This one day event was well attended achieving 92 delegates including representatives from industry, government, voluntary organisations and academics. The event was chaired by Baroness Margaret Sharp with a keynote speech from Baroness Sally Greengross, OBE.

At the workshop, discussions were organised around four different topics - the role of shopping for older people, what experiences they have; the role of meals - how important are meals to older people. The third session was organised around what kind of foods they buy and how they go about preparing them. The final session considered the services that are there for older people - how do they experience them and how do the service providers experience providing these types of services to older people.

Out of the Food in Later Life research came some key challenges. The team put these to the audience to discuss as a group how to provide better services for older people. The discussions were around - ‘who should take ownership of some of these issues’, ‘who can do something about them’ and ‘who can make sure the needs of older people are going to be met?’ The results of the discussions have been summarised and are available on the project website together with the media release, videos and transcripts of the speakers from the day and comments from attendees.

Challenges of Food in Later Life
The audience at the Dissemination Workshop were asked to contribute responses to the challenges posed on the four topics discussed at the conference – food shopping, food services, selecting and preparing meals and the role of meals. Below is a selection of suggestions received. It is recognised that some have already been actioned in some parts of the country. However, it is hoped that these lists can help stimulate all stakeholders to improve the services they offer.
