The Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of Porto University is the only public faculty in Portugal responsible for the graduation of nutritionists at the university level. We have a strong partnership with local and international institutions related to nutritional sciences. Our research includes the study of food and it’s composition, determinants of food habits and the relationship with nutrition, health and disease. The Faculty is the Portuguese coordinator of the following European Union funded projects: The Dafne IV (The European Food Availability Databank based on household budget surveys), Prochildren (Youth, fruits and vegetables - promoting and sustaining health through increased vegetable and fruit consumption among European School children); Trustinfood (Consumer trust in food).

Team Profile

The Portuguese team is coordinated by Professor Maria Daniel Vaz de Almeida, Doctor in Human Nutrition by the University of London (1989). Director of Faculty of Food and Nutrition Sciences (FCNAUP) she is also Professor (Full) in Community Nutrition and responsible of the Public Health Nutrition Area of the Faculty. Since 1996 she has been involved in several European Union funded projects, being the Portuguese coordinator of the following:

  1. Pan- European Project on Consumer Attitudes to Food, Nutrition and Health
  2. Pan-European Project on Consumer Attitudes to Health, Weight and Physical Activity
  3. Healthy aging
  4. The Dafne III and IV projects (The European Food Availability Databank based on household budget surveys)
  5. Prochildren (Youth, fruits and vegetables - promoting and sustaining health through increased vegetable and fruit consumption among European School children)
  6. Trustinfood (Consumer trust in food). In Food in Later Life she is the principal scientist involved in all workpackages and responsible for supervision of the work conducted by the Portuguese team.

Cláudia Afonso, BSc Nutrition, has a Master in Public Health by the Porto Medical Faculty (2000). She has also been one of the researchers involved in the three Pan European projects mentioned above. She lectures in Food and Nutrition in a senior citizen school. In Food in Later Life Cláudia Afonso was involved in all Work Packages, participating in the development of materials, recruitment of respondents, data transcription and analysis, reporting and dissemination of results.

Cecília Morais is a nutritionist, graduated from FCNAUP (2002), and researcher for Food in Later Life. She was involved in all Work Packages, mainly in participant recruitment and interviewing, and all aspects of data collection and analysis. She has also been working in a charity institution for the elderly and lectures in Food and Nutrition in a senior university.
